The History Department Mission Statement:

To investigate the impact of continuity and change upon human life in a sequential and cumulative manner and through a systematic application of such intellectual tools as analysis and interpretation to develop a self-educating person.​

Program Information

The History Department offers a variety of General Education and Elective courses. There are a number of ways these courses might be used for continuing education by students. Most commonly, students focus upon an Associate Degree for Transfer in History to the California State University System or focus on an appropriate IGETC plan for transfer to a University of California campus. Ultimately, history faculty at Orange Coast College seek to present students with challenges involved with "investigating" history, similar to the skillset of a detective or legal analyst. In this process, the story of our collective past can be discovered. History is really a debate, using sources, about what we "think" actually happened. We are really storytellers, looking to understand ourselves and our world through the narratives of those that came before us. Career paths for those involved in history generally center around (but are not limited to) teaching, archival curatorship, museums, law enforcement, historic preservation, record management, and governmental research. Many will seek to apply a history minor to any career that requires skills in research, analysis, and the discovery of the facts of past events.

Recommended for elementary education majors.

This course navigates students through major political, cultural, and economic moments and developments in the region labeled as Latin America. The course begins with the encounter of Europeans, Africans, and Indigenous Americans during the 15th and 16th centuries. The course also takes into account the construction and development of the Spanish and Portuguese colonial society, the course of independence, the creation of the nation-state, the influence of foreign powers and major international wars, and the changing political environment of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

This course covers the history of the United States from the pre-Columbian era to the modern day through the experiences of Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans and LatinX Americans. There will be a focus on how these racial ethnic groups helped shape the identity and culture of the United States. Additionally, the history of these groups will be analyzed by examining the interconnections of race, class, gender and social power used to struggle against racial hierarchies that created structural inequities in American society. Lastly, this course will examine the goals of the historical social justice movements which continue to combat these inequities.
