The Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer degree focuses on the understanding of sociological concepts, theories and methods that examine human interaction at an institutional and interpersonal level. Students will learn the process of the creation and maintenance of social structures and social order, with an emphasis being placed on how social identities such as race, ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality all interact with institutions including, but not limited to, family, religion, education, healthcare, criminal justice system and political bodies.
Program Level Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Analyze and evaluate multiple and competing social, political, and/or cultural arguments through the implementation of major sociological theoretical frameworks.
- Explain and evaluate how an individual's social identity and individual biography is shaped by social structures, social institutions, cultural routines, and social inequality.
- Interpret and evaluate several of the major social science research methodologies, as well as the relationship between research questions and methods.
- Identify and apply sociological concepts and theories to social phenomena through the implementation of the sociological imagination.
Associate Degree for Transfer Graduation Requirements
Associate Degrees for Transfer require students to meet the following requirements:
- Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of degree-applicable courses,
- Minimum overall grade point average of 2.0,
- Minimum grade of “C” (or “P”) for each course in the major, and
- Completion of Cal-GETC.
Students should consult a GWC counselor in order to select the best pathway to meet their educational goals. For students who intend to transfer, the choice of general education will be specific to both their major and transfer institution.
