This is a low intermediate level certificate program in English Language Learning which includes English reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It prepares students for further academic study in mid-intermediate level ELL and ESL courses by improving English language skills through a step-by-step grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening curriculum. After completing this certificate, students may go on to mid-intermediate ELL or ESL classes and pursue an ESL Intermediate Preparation for Careers Certificate of Competency, leading to higher-level ELL or ESL courses and eventually academic programs as well as career training programs. 

Program Level Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Given a simplified text, identify the main idea and supporting details.
  2. Express original ideas in appropriate, grammatically-correct sentences in response to level-appropriate readings in academic and real-world settings.
  3. Participate in short spontaneous conversations and accurately report information given by others. 

This award confirms that a student has completed a noncredit program that prepares students to progress in a career path or to take degree-applicable courses.
