This is a high beginning level certificate program in English Language Learning which includes basic English reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It prepares students for further academic study in intermediate level ELL and ESL courses by improving English language skills through a step-by-step grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening curriculum. After completing this certificate, students may go on to intermediate ELL or ESL classes and pursue an English as Second Language Preparation for Careers Certificate of Completion, leading to higher-level ESL courses and eventually academic programs as well as career training programs.

Program Level Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

1. Correctly identify in writing the main idea and supporting details after reading a text paragraph.

2. Given writing prompts, compose grammatically correct English sentences in the present, present progressive, past, and future tenses.

3. In a spontaneous conversation, ask and answer questions correctly and appropriately. 

This award confirms that a student has completed a noncredit program that prepares students to progress in a career path or to take degree-applicable courses.
