The Associate of Arts in Political Science for Transfer at Coastline College is designed to engage students in the rigorous study of government, public policy, political beliefs, and behaviors of groups and institutions. Courses in this major introduce students to the American political system, comparative politics, traditional and contemporary theory as well as political science methodology. Emphasis is placed on providing students the opportunity to develop skills such as analytical thinking, quantitative reasoning, research, argumentation, and communication, with extensive opportunities to apply discipline-specific skills to current issues and debates affecting both the political world and daily life. Completion of the program provides a solid foundation for students to ensure they are well prepared for a baccalaureate degree in political science. Successful students will demonstrate knowledge of the structures of government; changing issues, theories, and findings specific to political science; the ability to evaluate theories, arguments, and evidence of historic and contemporary political issues, and utilize appropriate investigative methods and technological skills to access and research and clearly present findings.
 

Associate Degrees for Transfer (AA-T or AS-T) are open to all Coastline students. Students who do not plan on transferring to a California State University school should consult their Counselor regarding the benefits of an AA-T/AS-T degree based on their goals. Students earning an AA-T or AS-T and intending on transferring to a California State University school receive transfer admission benefits for specific majors at many California State University campuses. Program Level Student Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of individual and collective rights and responsibilities in the context of  local, regional, national and global communities and governments.

  2. Utilize appropriate political science theory and knowledge to evaluate political and policy issues at the local, regional, national, and international level.

  3. Apply critical thinking and research skills to construct arguments and detect fallacies relating to key issues of public policy and politics.

Associate Degree for Transfer Requirements

  1. Minimum of 60 CSU-transferable semester units. A minimum of 12 units must be in residence within Coast Colleges (Coastline College, Golden West College, and/or Orange Coast College).
  2. Minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 in all CSU-transferable coursework.
  3. Completion of a minimum of 18 semester units in an Associate Degree for Transfer major as detailed in the catalog. All courses in the major must be completed with a grade of “C” or better or a “P” if the course is taken on a “pass-no pass” basis.
  4. Certified Completion of the California Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (CalGETC - Coastline Option 2 General Education pattern).
