Option 2 - CalGETC General Education
Designed for students who are planning to transfer to a university in the CSU or UC system. However, it may be appropriate for transfer to some independent colleges. In addition to the General Education requirements below, students must complete additional requirements for the Associate Degree listed in the catalog. Transfer students are strongly advised to contact a Coastline Counselor for guidance in preparing an educational plan. In addition, for the most current articulation information, visit the official course transfer and articulation system for California’s public colleges and universities, Assist.
Complete at least 34 units in the specific courses listed areas 1-6. These courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. One course may not be used to satisfy more than one general education requirement; however, the same course may be used to satisfy both a general education requirement and a requirement for the major or Area of Emphasis. Students may also double-count courses for the Global Society Requirement.
Certification of General Education for Transfer to CSU or UC with CalGETC
Upon student request, Coastline will verify the completion of lower-division general education requirements for transfer to the California State University or the University of California. Courses can only be certified if they were on the CalGETC approved list at the time they were taken by the student. Students who transfer without certification will have to meet the general education requirements of the specific CSU or UC campus to which they are transferring. Meeting these requirements usually necessitates taking additional courses. Coastline will certify courses only once. Certification is not automatic and must be requested after the completion of the last term prior to transfer. This request should be made in the Admissions office when final transcripts are requested to be sent to the transfer university.
Certificate of Achievement in California General Education Transfer Curriculum
Upon completion of this General Education pattern, students receiving CalGETC certification will also automatically receive a Certificate of Achievement in California General Education Transfer Curriculum (CalGETC).

Languages Other Than English (UC Requirement Only)
Most non-language undergraduate majors at the University of California require or recommend that students demonstrate competence in at least one language other than English at time of graduation from their colleges. This is a graduation requirement for the UC and is separate from CalGETC.
Each UC has its own specific LOTE requirements as listed on the UC Graduation Requirements website. Language courses appearing on the CalGETC list may count toward this requirement and students may find it beneficial to begin work toward this UC graduation requirement at Coastline. Please consult with your Counselor if you have additional questions.
American Institution Requirements
CSU has an American Institutions requirement that is separate from CalGETC. Courses used to meet the CSU requirement can be double counted in Area 3 or 4. To meet the CSU requirement, students should take POLS C180 American Government and Politics and one of the following courses: HIST C170 United States History to 1876 or HIST C175 United States History since 1876.
UC requires the completion of a college course or courses with a grade of C or better or a one-year course in high school in U.S. history or a half-year course in U.S. history and a half-year course in American government with grades of C or better (UCLA requires grades of “B”). UCSB requires the completion of a college course. If you are using college coursework to satisfy this requirement, check the appropriate UC catalog to determine which course(s) to take.
